How to position Quad-core Intel® Xeon® processors to the right market segments

There have always been questions regarding how fast Quad-core Intel® Xeon® processors are against Dual-core Intel® Xeon® processors. Today, Frequency (e.g. 1.66GHz, 2.2GHz, 3.2GHz) alone is NO LONGER an indication of a processor’s performance. You have to look into three variables that make up the processors’ performance. They are the Frequency, the Cache Memory, and the Front Side Bus (FSB).

So, how do you quantify a server processor’s performance with the three variables? It’s simple! Use third party server benchmarks such as Specint_rate_base 2000 (for General Purpose Computing) and Specfp_rate_base 2000 (for Scientific Computing). Kindly see the attached how different server processors compare with regard to these third party benchmarks.

To give you a clearer picture of the rest of the Intel® Xeon® processor line-up. There are four types to cater among different market segments and their respective computing needs:

Intel® Itanium® 2 processor 9000 sequence platforms – these are positioned for RISC/Mainframe Replacement. Most scalable (up to 512 -way), reliable, high-performance Intel 64-bit servers for your most data demanding and HPC workloads with outstanding price/performance, mainframe-class availability and unparalleled choice of OS, applications and system vendors compared to RISC.

Intel® Xeon® processor 7000 sequence platforms – these are positioned for the Enterprise MP (Multi-processor). These are the servers capable of supporting up to thirty-two processors (which explains the term, “32-way”). Powerful, scalable (up to 32-way), reliable 64-bit servers for enterprise mid-range applications offering efficiency, flexibility and service uptime with unique features ideal for server consolidation.

Intel® Xeon® processor 5000 sequence platforms – these are meant for the mainstream DP based servers (DP means Dual-processor based servers, in other words, “2-way”). Versatile, cost-effective 2-way 64-bit servers for all your infrastructure, high-density and HPC applications with features that enable optimal performance and power savings for the data center.
Intel® Xeon® 50XX sequence refers to the first generation of Intel’s Dual-core based server processors.
Intel® Xeon® 51XX sequence refers to the second generation of Intel’s Dual-core based server processors.
Intel® Xeon® 53XX sequence refers to the newest generation of Intel’s Quad-core based server processors.

Intel® Xeon® processor 3000 sequence – these are positioned for entry UP servers (UP stands for uni-processor based servers, in other words, “1-way”). This set of processors is entirely new to the Intel family of server processors. Customers who only need one Xeon® processor in a server would have to purchase an Intel® Xeon® 5000 sequence based platform (with one processor) to take advantage of its resiliency or sometimes purchase a non-recommended desktop processor based PC risking system resiliency for price concerns. Now, Intel had seen a substantial market that needs a single processor based Xeon platform, thus, the making of the Intel® Xeon® processor 3000 sequence! The new Intel® Xeon® 3000 based systems will run as a REAL server at a cost similar to a high end desktop PC.
Intel® Xeon® 30XX sequence refers to the Core Micro-Architecture based Dual core processors.
Intel® Xeon® 32XX sequence refers to the Core Micro-Architecture based Quad core processors.

Intel’s first Quad-core based Xeon processors for Dual Processor (DP) socket motherboards fall under the Intel Xeon processor 5000 sequence. These quad-core based processors for DP motherboards start with the 53XX sequence. Quad-core Xeon processors for uni- processor (UP) socket motherboards are under the Intel Xeon 3000 sequence and start with the 32XX sequence.
